Running from vs. reaching for

Running from vs. reaching for

For years I had a dream: live in Bali, work from my laptop, and build a simple life near the water.

Maybe you have your own version. Mine was specific: sell most of what I own, get on a plane, rent a simple place near the water. Swim every morning. Do simple work that pays for a simple life. Be around real people, the kind that talk about what actually matters instead of performing for each other.

I could see it in detail. I could almost feel the water.

And it was a real dream. I carried it for years, on good days and ordinary days, and at some point I stopped calling it a someday thing and started building toward it.

Then one day actually came. I sold my stuff, I got on the plane, I rented the simple place near the water. I swam in the mornings. I did the simple work. And I want to say this plainly, because everything that follows depends on it: it was amazing. The dream come true was everything I hoped it would be. I loved that life, and I am glad for every single day of it.

Now, there are two reasons people chase a different life. And from the inside, they can feel identical.

One runs from a feeling. It says a different city would fix it, a different life, a different version of you, a different person. That reason has no real interest in Bali. What it wants is distance from something that lives in your chest right now. It will take any destination that is far enough away.

The other reason is simpler: you genuinely want the thing. When I got honest about my dream, that is what I found. The water, because my body softens around water and always has. Movement. Simple work that leaves room to live. People who are real with me. Those desires were true, and mine was this kind of dream. I wanted that life for real, and I went and built it.

You can hear the difference between the two if you slow down and get honest. Escape talks about elsewhere, about there and later, about the person you would finally become once everything around you is different. Desire talks in the present tense. It says: I want this. I want to swim. I want mornings that start slow. Desire names the thing. Escape names the location.

But here is the part I did not see coming.

My patterns came with me.

A few months into the dream, the same loops I had at home were running again. I caught myself saying yes to pressure I did not need to say yes to. I skipped the swim to sit longer at the laptop. Work felt like pressure from every side, my chest was tight, and I was feeling all of that fifty meters from the water I had dreamed about for years.

Nothing about Bali caused that. The place kept every promise it made. The water was exactly what I hoped, the people were real, the mornings were slow whenever I let them be slow. I simply brought my old loops along. You take yourself everywhere you go. My patterns got on the plane with me and sat in the middle seat. And there I was, running them in paradise. Which is clarifying, in a way. Because there was nothing left to blame. The place was never the problem.

I see the same thing in relationships all the time. Leaving for a new city, a new man, a fresh start. And sometimes leaving is right. Maybe it really was over. Maybe the new life is a genuine want, the way Bali was for me. I would never tell you to stay where you are being disrespected. But whatever is unfinished in you comes along, no matter how good your reasons for going are. The new man feels different for a few months. Then something in you warms up the old loop, and you catch yourself scanning his face the way you scanned the last one's, softening your words the way you always have. And the 2am question comes back: why does this keep happening to me?

It keeps happening because the pattern is unfinished. Unfinished patterns do not respect geography. They were there before him. They will be there after him. They will board every plane you ever take.

This is what completion changes. The dream was never the problem, and going for it was never the problem either. The unfinished pattern underneath is what keeps repeating, and no external change can complete it, because external change was never pointed at it. When you stop managing the pattern and go to the feeling underneath, feel it all the way through, complete it, the loop stops running. And then everything you built gets to be clean. The new city, the new love, the life near the water, all of it fully yours, with nothing old running underneath.

I have not been to Bali in about eight years now. It was a real dream, I am glad I lived it, and it taught me lessons I still use. The dream comes back from time to time, and I still have to be careful and discern.

So if you carry a dream of somewhere else, and it is genuine, go. Build it and live it. I did, and it was worth everything. Just know what the dream can and cannot do for you. It can give you the water and the mornings and the people. It cannot finish your patterns, because you take yourself everywhere you go. Complete them too, and the good life you build gets to be all the way yours.
